But a Passive House can use toxic materials that aren’t sustainable?

So can any house, and almost ALL do!

BUT… A passive house can be made of ANY materials that any other building can be made of. It can be made from towards net zero materials, timber, steel, concrete, hemp, rammed earth, straw, etc, etc. Often the material choices are determined by many factors including economics, availability, site restrictions, climate etc, but most importantly the client can choose what materials and construction type suits them. Passive house is not exclusive of any material types. It can encompass many other ideas and materials within the concept, including net zero materials, renewable energy, in fact, there are standards within the passive house certification that defines different levels above classic passive house, PH plus, or PH premium which goes all the way to net zero. as shown in the diagram below.

So not only can you choose sustainable materials for your build, but you maximise those resources-i by building the most sustainable buildings that are available.
